Marjorie Blen

SMAC Fellow: 2018
College: CCSF
Degree Pursuing: Sociology and Early Childhood Education
Transfer Goal: Hopefully in 4 years (2 years at CCSF) and 2 years at SF State.
Career Goal: To work in the community to make my community and other communities a better place.
I organize and advocate for social justice because I want my children to have a better life and to expose the injustice that our government and policy around the country creates in our communities. I want kids and grandkids to know that you can stand up for yourself and those around you. That we will refuse to be scared, oppressed, and put in a box. To create a better bright future for my boys.
When I am not organizing and advocating for social justice I am spending time with the people that I love.
Fun Facts:  I love to research, I cry to romantic/sad movies, I am very passionate about everything I do in my life, I thrive to be the best mom ever.

Yair Tapia

SMAC Fellow: 2018
College: CCSF
Degree Pursuing: English but I'm also getting my Latino Studies AA
Transfer Goal: UC Berkeley
Career Goal: Researcher, writer, artist, critique, philanthropist-Jedi, English professor, poet, and emphasis on writer.
I organize and advocate for social justice because people talk about giving back like it's something extra I don't have to do, but I don't see how it's not an obligation if my community raised me.

When I am not organizing and advocating for social justice I am raising my community through literature, I'm a writer and it's complicated and complex, but it can be as simple as listening to someone who needs it.
Fun Facts: I skate; I go hard on the paint; if I hadn't become a writer, it would have been a mad scientist (I'm a geek for science and math though I chose to appreciate them from a distance).

HEAR FROM OUR STUDENTs

What does smac mean to you?

SMAC means to me knowledge, respect, opportunity, helping other, understanding others, feeling like you are not alone in the struggle of being a community college student stuck in a sequence looking for help ... SMAC means a family
